Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Unix timestamp?
The number of seconds since 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC (the Unix epoch), ignoring leap seconds. Many systems use milliseconds (13 digits) instead; some use micro- or nanoseconds.
How does it know if my timestamp is in seconds or milliseconds?
By digit count: up to 11 digits is seconds, 12–14 milliseconds, 15–17 microseconds, and 18 or more nanoseconds. You can override the unit manually.
What is the year 2038 problem?
Signed 32-bit integers overflow at 2147483647 seconds, which is 2038-01-19 03:14:07 UTC. Systems still storing time in 32 bits will wrap around to 1901.
Does it handle time zones and daylight saving?
Yes. Conversions use your browser's built-in timezone database (Intl), so any IANA zone such as America/New_York or Asia/Kolkata is handled, including daylight-saving transitions.
