Frequently Asked Questions
What is AGENTS.md?
An open, plain-Markdown file at the root of a repository that tells AI coding agents how to work in it: setup and test commands, code style, project layout and rules. It is supported by many agents and stewarded under the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation.
Do I need both AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md?
Claude Code reads CLAUDE.md. Pick "single source" and the generated CLAUDE.md just imports AGENTS.md with @AGENTS.md, so you only maintain one file.
What goes in a good AGENTS.md?
Exact commands to install, build, test and lint; conventions a newcomer would get wrong; where things live; and hard rules (never commit secrets, don't edit generated files). Keep it short and specific: agents read it on every task.
What is the difference between .cursorrules and .cursor/rules?
.cursorrules is Cursor's legacy single-file format. Current Cursor uses .mdc files in .cursor/rules/ with front matter (description, globs, alwaysApply) that controls when each rule applies.
